Many sign makers start out from home after investing in a computer cut-out letting machine and a few materials. When requirements demand specialist machinery, they can outsource some of the work, as there are a large number of companies servicing the sign industry. A bit of history: 30 years ago, one common method used in sign making which was seen more as an art back then, was where the sign maker or sign writer (a term rarely used these days) writes with a paint brush. I remember my father doing this. He would use tape as a top and bottom guideline, then use a pencil to mark the letters before painting the letters between the tapes. Courtesy of Wikipedia
