The invention of the mouse pre-existed the invention of the mousepad by about 17 years. During this time the mouse had very little acceptance in the engineering and industrial computer communities as there were other, much better, pointing devices. Office computers had been used industrially since as early as the early 1970's. However, these computers were not affordable by the general public. Businesses that purchased the office computers made sure that one machine was shared by a group of engineers or a group of secretaries due to its very high expense.
