He was first seen in the 1954 film Gojira, produced by Toho Film Company Ltd. To date, Toho has produced 28 Godzilla films. In 1998, TriStar Pictures produced a remake, set in New York City. Godzilla is seen by some as the personification of the horror of nuclear weapons. According to the legend of the cinematic behemoth, he was created by a nuclear blast. His sheer size, power and destruction evoke the fury of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
